I just got back from my "hunt of a lifetime" in Alaska. My partner and I flew west out of McGrath in a Beaver and did an 11day unguided moose hunt. We did a float trip out of Bethel three years ago and although we did not get a moose, we learned a lot. Everything came together this trip and we passed on a legal (50”) bull the second evening. In all we saw over 25 moose and passed on (3) legal bulls before connecting on Scotts 64” bull the second week. Two mornings before we were to fly out, we headed downriver to a hotspot where I had (3) bulls all answering my calls the previous evening(all within a ½ mile or so). My intent was to video a successful calling session and get footage of a bull on the riverbank. When the bull finally stepped out, I went from cameraman to hunter! I knew that this may very well be my last chance at lifetime dream. Using a rifle that I built and my own custom wildcat cartridge (330GP), I put 45 years of practice and shooting skill into one 180yard shot. He dropped like a Tri-Pacer! Getting 2 big bulls quartered and hanging in camp(in 3 days) was the most physically demanding thing that I have ever done in my life! Although Wx prevented any flying, I got to spend 3 days in Anchorage with my son Amos as frosting on the cake. I can hardly wait to get back up there. You AK guys and gals are the luckiest people on earth!
