  • Wanted: aircraft covers

I have lost access to the hangar I have been privledged to use, it seems the Civil Air Patrol has heart burn about a CAP member keeping a hand propped aircraft in the hangar. Oh, well. Since I have to keep my plane outside I'm looking for some covers. What should I buy, and how much should I expect to pay? Here in Kodiak it does not get as cold as the interior of Alaska, but wind, driving rain, and ice are real factors to deal with. If nessesary I may be able to pull the wings off and keep it in a garage. I really don't want to do that because even though the weather can be nasty during the winter, when the WX is good it's some of the best flying of the year. Anyway I could use some advice, and or some leads on covers.
    Thanks in advance,

    Leroy

Several good companies out there, but I am personally familiar with Kennon. I like their stuff. Several styles and fabrics to choose from. Soft lining style works well with fabric wings, but in freezing weather the Alaska mesh may be a better choice. Call them and ask questions.
Here is a testimonial from their web site:

    Spoiler Mesh Wing/Tail Covers

“The wind was blowing 40+ mph for days, with periods of 50-60 mph-but my plane will fly below 40 mph! (we were blown off our feet at times).

We buried the skis in snow to help hold the plane down, but this wouldn't’t have stopped the plane from blowing away in the strong winds. I spent a few sleepless nights sitting in the plane at the controls, hoping I could save the plane by flying it into the ground should a gust try to lift it.

But, the amazing thing was-the plane didn’t fly away!! The wing covers worked-they spoiled the air flow over the wings as advertised...I give all the credit to the Kennon wing covers-the plane was still there.”

Keith Echelmeyer, Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska.
These famous wing cover are the best sellers in Alaska. They keep the wings and tail free from ice, snow and frost and provide protection from high wind.

A frost particle, snow flake or ice crystal is larger than the opening of fine mesh. Precipitation collects on the outside of the cover. When the cover is removed, the precipitation comes with it. Wings dry faster.

Mesh doesn't’t trap moisture so the covers don’t freeze solidly to the wing during thaw and refreeze conditions. The black mesh absorbs the sun to hasten drying.

    Order Wing/Tail Covers securely.

Here is a virtual cocoon from Bruce's Custom Covers. Each item priced separately. Wings are about $850 for a set of two.

        www.alaskawingcovers.com.
Great service and reasonable prices. I would recommend the vented nylon covers. Keeps snow off better than mesh and don't catch the wind like the straight nylon.
