  • Shinn Wheel

We pulled the wheels to check / pack the bearings and found a problem with one of the wheels. There is a piece about the size of a half quarter missing from the rim where the brake pad is mounted. I'll post another message tonight with a picture of it. The markings on the hub are as follows.

    >Shinn Devices Corp, Butler PA
    >Date Mfg 12/39 (9 wasn't clear, best guess)
    >Max. Load 900 lbs.
    >Model No. 6C 4B
    >ATC 63

Does anyone have either a whole wheel or inner half of hub in good condition they would be willing to sell?

    Thanks
    Blake

Here's a photo of it. Actually it may be more like 1/3rd of a half dollar coin. Is a repair possible?

      Blake,
When I got my BC12-D in 1985 it had been sitting on the rims for years and they were heavily damaged. It looked as though someone had dragged the plane on locked rims and worn large flat spots on the outer flanges - ouch.

But I got them repaired! In my case a skilled welder in an aircraft shop built up the missing metal and re-shaped it to match the rest of the wheel. You can't even see the repair.

If you would rather just get an inner half, I have one. PM and I'll send photo and asking price.
      Best Regards,

Here are front and back photos of the wheels we have on hand. (they belong to Doc) They are not perfect, but they are serviceable. The black one is a Firestone and the silver one is a Shinn. Both of them have some minor dents in the body which can be see in the photos. The Firestone is dented on the outside half and the Shinn on the brake flange half.

I am an A&P, and from what I have read, since there are no longer any parts being made, your local mechanic, can make or duplicate the parts need, as long as a mechaic certifies the repairs made, this will work for repairs. the mechanic, can do this as a one serial number repair, only.

Curious about where you read that, can you say where you read it?

As an A&P I can not make parts for my Taylorcraft. BUT as an owner I can and then as an A&P I can install it into the airplane and sign it off as airworthy with an owner made part. Look into Owner made parts .

I would like to look at it also.

                  Hi Bernard,

Check out FAR 21.9(5) and 21.9(6), they give the 1) mechanic, 2) owner and 3) operator the "privilege" to produce the part.

Each however will need some approved data to make the part so none of the three have any real advantage over the since all three will need approved data.

Actually I suppose the mechanic will have an advantage since it would be easier to convince yourself that you made the part correctly than it would be for an owner to convince us that he made the part correctly.

                  Dave.

I was going by information I got from the faa.gov web site, when looking for " owner produced parts " . It took me to " https://www.faa.gov/news/safety_brie...ulyaug2002.pdf " . Which had an article on owner produced parts, who can and can not make parts and the logging of owner produced parts.

                      Thanks Bernard.

Here are couple more recent advisory circulars. They may be helpful also.

FAR 21.303 as means of owner produced parts was replaced by 21.9 around 2009/2010.
