  • F-22 Experimental Taylorcraft

Saw this on Barnstormers today, one of our guys should definitely get this IMHO. With a 150HP engine, this would embarrass the heck out of a few Super Cub owners

1992 TAYLORCRAFT F-22 • $12,000 • FOR SALE • This Taylorcraft was originally built by Taylorcraft in Lock-haven, PA. Currently licensed as an amateur experimental. The T-craft is complete minus the engine and the prop. The tail feathers, aileron and flaps have all been recovered in stitts. The airframe and the wings still need to be covered. This is a great flying airplane STOL. Serial number 2215. • Contact Dave Allen, Owner - located Chandler, AZ USA • Telephone: 480-330-5452 • Posted June 21, 2014

    Hi Bill-
Nice snag on the F22. I watch the adds for them as they are quite rare. There were only serial numbers 2201 to 2217 made ( plus maybe 2 that went to UK). Last production by the Ferris Taylorcraft in 1992, so these are only 22 years old instead of 68 years for the typical BC12D. Serial Number 2216 is deteriorating in a hail shed in TX- has not moved in years.

I hope some one is interested in the AZ F22 as it is good plane, the only problem being the wing tanks are leakers. And that might be why it is in experimental status, if the tanks have some other design.

This is the gentleman who bought 43338 from me. Very nice person to deal with. who also owns two bc12ds. He told me he's looking for a Stinson reliant. He originated the video "taylorcraft fun " which shows the one I sold him.

        Re: F-22 Experimental Taylorcraft

        Hi Mike,

I have the F22A ( nosewheel ) here in the Principality of Wales in the UK. Her serial number is 2207 and she has only done about 590 hours total engine and airframe. I also have some of the parts from the F22 ( Taildragger ) which flew with her to the UK back in 1991. This aircraft was totalled in a landing accident by a previous owner and I purchased what I could for spares.

The tanks do leak and someone once summed it up by saying that F22 series tanks are either leaking or waiting to leak! Both of mine have been repaired once by me and the other by a previous owner. They leak due to fabric clips which are attached to the tanks and with the vibration etc eventually the clips part company with the tanks leaving a nice leak! To make things worse there are metal strainers running through the tanks which means that a repair involves wing removal and major surgery! Once removed further leaks will be found unless you are very lucky!

The tell tale signs of trouble is the usual under wing fuel staining and I wouldn't touch a F22 series aircraft which displayed any of these signs. A bumpy grass strip did it for the wing tank I had repaired.

Apart from this potential problem the F22A is an excellent aircraft although perhaps the slow speed handling could be improved and I am currently fitting vortex generators to see if this improves things.

        Regards, Bob Preston.

At Mexia Airport. I have not tried to contact the owner in New York. It would make an interesting project if I had time...
