  • TG-6 to L-2x rebuild conundrum

I started this thread before the server went down and I guess it was a casualty of the crash. The conundrum is that my L-2 (former TG-6) project has notched wings and a turtledeck fuselage. I prefer the observer fuselage but am reluctant to modify the fuselage to do that. I don't know if having notched wings with the turtledeck is either legal or desireable. If I build the wings straight then I'll need to get the full length metal root ribs and the aluminum fuselage close out ribs. Any one have spares?

John Shearer sent me a PM to discuss it but the forum went down before I could respond. John, call me at 281 844-0987.

All of the L2's we had at the flight school were fastbacks with notched wings. All were slightly different on the back, one even had a tubular structure called a Frizzell Fastback. I wouldn't sweat it and build what you want. We never had any issues with flight characteristics or airworthiness concerns.

Thanks Ed. I had not heard of any others configured that way. With as fuzzy as things are with these things there's probably no way to prove whats correct or not.

Re: TG-6 to L-2x rebuild conundrum

There were approximately 453 model "D"s built. 200 DC,DF,DL-65 and YO-57,O-67 and L-2. All the others were DCO-65 (O-57A,L-2A,L-2B and L-2M). As far as the fuselage differences. The first 200 sn 4000 to 4199 were built with the straight back (including the TG-6 (sn 6000-6253). When the O-57A sn 4200 and up were built the fiselage wa changed to the greenhouse and swivel rear sseat. When that was done there were a lot of changes in the cabin area. To install the swivel seat there two tubes eliminated. To compesate for that the tubing wall thickness was increased ( the four one inch vertical tubes and the spar carrythrus.) THe gross weight was increased from 1250 to 1300 pounds. As near as I can tell when the TG-6s were converted to model D the gross was held at 1200 pounds. All the model Ds were built to ATC746.

Forrest, It will be about six weeks before I will feel like doing much. I'm starting another round of treatment. The first session did not cure my bladder cancer. I'll keep watching the forum and as soon as I feel up to it I'll come down. Dick
