  • L-2M pre-buy inspection - what should I look for?

    I'm looking at a couple of different L-2s that are for sale, what are some of the key things to check on these planes? A knowledgeable guy told me he's seen the ribs basically falling apart due to deteriorated original glue joints, how common is that issue? If wings have not been re-built ever is that a problem?

    I know to check for corrosion at the lowest point in the tail tubes...is that best done by just tapping with a hammer?

    What else should I look for? Any tip is appreciated!

    Steve, They used Cassin Glue in building up the Ribs. Yes I would look carefully at the structure of the Wing. While many have been rebuilt hopefully using FAA approved Resorcinol or T-88 (not "approved") just more forgiving and just as good in my humble opinion. Of course the lower longerons in any tube n fabric taildragger.

    Replacement Struts were at one point non existent, Not sure if Wag Aero ever resolved that one. Also these really benefit from a C-85 or an 0-200. I would not want one with a 65 if I were hauling folks on summer days....       There is a gentleman, Robin Reid, who grew up with these airplanes. He, and his mother Amelia, are well-known in the Taylorcraft community. He did my pre-buy out in California and ferried it to me in Illinois about ten years ago. I can get you in-contact with Robin if you are interested.
