  • Aileron mounting bracket question

The brackets that mount the ailerons to the wings are different between the left and right wings. The left hand wing has little plates welded to them to allow attachment to the coving with two screws (see the attached photo). the left wing brackets do not have this plate. There is no evidence on the brackets that they have broken off. If they were removed, the weld bumps must have been carefully filed off.

Is it a safety problem not to have these?
Were they present only on later models, ore only on early models? Can anyone tell me?

As I remember, the hangers with the tabs are from a pre-war wing and the hangers with out the tabs are off a post war version. Not sure, been many years ago. Others may have a better recollection.

I have a post war BC12D. It has the tabs on the bracket on the right wing. I had to tighten up the two screws at the last annual. I am not sure, but I believe the left wing also has the tabs.

          Re: Aileron mounting bracket question

The picture you have is of a pre war welded steel aileron hinge. The post wars had mostly cast magnesium hinges. There was a little "L" bracket on each side with a small screw going through a "L" bracket, the aileron hinge and then the other "L" bracket sandwiching it all together. These strengthen the aileron hinge and help in keeping the aileron cove where it needs to be.

I have a 46 BC12. But I think the wings might be pre-war. I'm working on a restore/recover. I just took apart the aileron bracket. Mine have a steel u-bracket thrown over the aileron hinge bracket with a 1/2" wood spacer block between the cove and the bracket.
I'll try to post a picture.
            Is this wrong?
the wood was really rough-looking. So I just bought some spruce from ACS and I was going to fashion new wood spacers.
Should I be planning to weld on the brackets shown above instead?
