All DCO model "D"s qualify EXCEPT for sn's between 5166 to 5999 and sn's 6253 and up. These are the L-2M military ships and have a 1325 pound gross. As for the model "B" ships you have to take these one by one because a lot of them have been modified to the 1500 pound weight limit. Dick

        "B" series sportplanes

Yes but I thought that the FAA was going to go by what the weight the certificate was granted for. My friend has an Ercoupe that is (by definition) 32 pounds too heavy. He called the FAA and told them that he would remove the cowl tank, thereby removing more than the 32 pounds (when full), and they said "no, it was originally certificated at the higher weight, and THAT is what the FAA goes by". They can't have it BOTH ways. Sabrina

Does an STC change the original type certificate or just modify it? If you modify a BC12D to the model 19 specs via STC does that change the T.C. of that plane when you file the paperwork or is it still under the original A-696 T.C. which is a 1200lb gross weight?
Can you legally operate a plane like the one described above in the sport pilot category at the 1500lb gross weight? Will you be able to get STC's for sport pilot aircraft in the future to increase the gross weight? As an investment would it be smart to modify a BC12D to F19 specs or is it more valuable if kept in the sport pilot category as a BC12D???? I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens to the selling price for these classic certified planes that qualify under the new rules.
