  • F21 to F21A, fuel tanks?

Hello all, first post here. Have a project coming into my shop for a wing rebuild on an F21. Upon inspection the owner asked if there was any way to increase fuel capacity, upon reviewing the short list of STC's for the airplane I reviewed the TC and saw the only real listed difference between the F21 and the A are the tanks. So my real question for now is: Has anyone done this seemingly simple changeover, and are parts and drawings available for the F21A fuel system? Thanks for any support and replies!

This is a good question. The larger tanks are physically interchangeable with the older models, but that is not the problem.

The larger tanks are possibly the rarest Taylorcraft part around, for two reasons: first there were so few F21 and F22 models manufactured- 60 total according to the serial number chart in the Taylorcraft resources FAQ. So that is 60 lefts and 60 right side tanks in the world. Spares are non-existent.

Second there is a design flaw that causes leakage due to flexing of the tank at its attach points. All these tanks leak or will eventually.

I am pretty sure that there are STCs for adding 2 more 6 gallon tanks in the wings and interconnecting them. These tanks are available new, but the approvals may have been one time STCs.

Building new large tanks with the same design might be possible, but knowing that they are flawed makes getting the necessary FAA approvals problematic.

      .
Thank you for the info, this would be acceptable if the source of these tanks and paperwork were available, any ideas on that?

I am working on a similar project with one of the guys on this forum. Slow going... It would be helpful to find parts lists and service instructions or drawings from Taylorcraft. Otherwise we have to develop it all and that's a tougher road with FAA.

The tanks are available new for $450 from WagAero on page 47 Cat No 1546L and 1546R.

The one off STC is at the Taylorcraft Resources Page http://www.taylorcraft.org/resources.html#337_STC_data

Look in the wings section. It is a Left and Right tank on both sides, interconnected.

The total gallons would be 4 x 6 plus the 12 gallon header tank for 36 total.
