  • Garmin GPS loses signal in unsheilded L2

I have a Garmin 196 GPS. I lose signal on a reqular basis in my L2A. I have tried the remote antennae but that did not help. I belive the electronics in the unit is being swamped by RF from the unsheilded ignition. I normally have the unit sitting on top of the glare sheild on the right side. If I move the unit and hold it behind the intrument panel ( below line of site with the plug wires signal returns. Any ideas on sheilding unit. I do not have the ability to put sheilded wires on mags.

Some one suggested putting braided wire over plug wires. Does this help at all. I do have large ground straps from engine case to motor mount. But that didn't help.

I do believe it does help,Try the upper wires first Use shrink tubing at the ends of the braid to make sure it does not short out anything. i suppose you could use tape but im betting it will help and you won't want to do them over. make sure you ground the braiding to the engine block. you can use the braid from grand auto or pep boys its cheap to try. Let us know how it works.
