Hello, I am new to the forum and i bought a bl65 that has been converted to a bc65. I am located at Cable airport in Upland, Ca. I have a couple of questions that I'm sure you guys can answer. This forum has a lot of info and maybe I am just not looking in the right spot. The only thing Idon't like about this great little plane is the breaks. Has any one put juice breaks on and if so how was this done. My breaks will not hold for run-up. Also can you fly with the doors off?

    Thanks
    Dennis Luckett

      Re: Breaks

7532. Ye gads here we go again. First welcome. Second please search this site for the carring and feeding of your shinn brakes. You will find these brakes to be perfectly fine IF you get em in shape. You will find they work well, are simple and light. Juice brakes will weigh more (something our Ts do NOT need ) If you have an 0320 or 0360 then we can start talking change. If your do not hold for run up its not the brake design per say Its the maintenance and adjustment.

            Re: Breaks

            Dennis,
I have a 1940 BC-65. When I first got it, the brakes would not hold it, and I was thinking of going to hydraulic toe brakes. The folks on this site talked me out of that, and once I sorted the brakes out, they worked, and still work fine.

              Re: Breaks

Dennis I sent you a private e-mail as well. Welcome to the Taylorcraft group! You will find a lot of help and camaraderie here.

Regardless of the existence of several additional discussion categories, the "Daily Taylorcraft Discussion" is usually the place for new people to introduce themselves, get to know what's going on, and ask the basic questions.

We have a few Taylorcrafts here in So Cal and several pretty well educated people.

Your stock brakes should be able to be adjusted and maintained to hold against nearly a full power runup. The hydraulic brakes create as many problems as they solve usually. Like Jim said, unless you are swinging 150 horsepower there is no real need for hydraulic units in the normal world.

It is usually a good idea to "poll" this group before you make any major decisions on your airplane. Most of us have been down whatever road you are considering.

Myself and I'm sure several other experienced Taylorcraft owners will be glad to help with just about any problems, either in person or on this forum.

                  Re: Breaks

On the subject of brakes, my f 19 breaks are pretty much shot getting the pads is not a problem. But my wheels are warped. So I basically need a new set of every thing last I looked this was around $1000 or so. Does anybody know of any alternatives to fix this more cheaply.

                  Thanks
