  • Stewart Systems and other questions

    1. N44425 is torn down and almost ready for covering, LOL. Has anyone used Stewart system for their T-craft? I like the idea of water borne coating. They are supposed to be really bright.

    2. Would like to change from sliding side windows to tip out from bottom windows, Possible ? How hard?

    3. I am looking for a 6 gal. rh wing tank. I have a complete metal spar clipped wing with twin left hand tanks. Has aileron with hinged trim tab.

    4. My nose bowl has a 2" x 4" whole extending into the center hole. Anyone have one that more easily repaired?
    Thanks.

Re: Stewart Systems and other questions

I'm about 2/3 done on restoring a '46 BC-12D. Very pleased with all Stewart System so far. Have put brushed coats of silver (EcoFil) on
tail surfaces, wings and ailerons. Fuselage ready for EcoFil. Have done no spraying so far. Customer service was EXCELLENT when company was in North West. Now that they are in Ohio, I'm not sure they have their act together as to advice and help. Maybe they need a little more time. Lee Nicklas

Thanks. Can you post a few shots of your progress. How does Stewarts fabric compare weight wise to Stits. Thanks

Re: Stewart Systems and other questions

I've used it since the 90's. In fact I liked it so much that I owned part of the company for a while, before Stewarts bought it. One thing I'm going to caution you on.... if it's covered through the fill coat, and it's not tightly covered with plastic (like just sitting out) for a time, while you cover/catch up with other stuff....you're going to have contamination issues when you go to paint. I'm not sure why people do that, but it seems like many will get to the point you are, and then let it sit for a couple weeks, uncovered, while they continue to work in the shop. The Ekofill will act like a sponge if you've used WD-40 or any other oils that can be airborne. Get some visqueen on it if you're going to do that. Better yet, take it all the way through a base color topcoat.
It's a great system IF you follow the directions carefully! It's not quite as forgiving as a solvent borne system, but it's nothing that can't be overcome with just good practices.

Re: Stewart Systems and other questions

I actually cut 1foot squares of most covering types and weighed them. The Superflight was heaviest, and cotton with dope was the lightest. Stewarts was on par (slightly less)than a dacron and dope finish. I calcuated it out that on a 2 place taildragger, Superflight would add about 30lbs over the dope finish.

Re: Stewart Systems and other questions

I recovered my '46 BC12-D using the Stewart Systems. Worked great. If you look in the "Taylorcraft Aircraft Registry" part of this site, you can find a whole blog of my restoration project under "N96872". The covering and painting parts are in the last couple of pages.
