I'm putting my Shinn brakes back together. As it turned out the left was on the right side and the right was on the left side. I have 2 questions. The horseshoe lever is tapered and the feet are not the same on both sides. I'm guessing that the taper goes towards the backing plate, that way it has clearance to pull inward. There is a tab wrapped around the upper part of the horseshoe, that connects to the bellcrank using a short rod (see picture). Currently, it is offset with the tab close to the top. That is the way I took it off. If I keep it that way, I have to enlarge the hole in the backing plate substantially. If I turn it over, it fits betters, but the pulling angle to the bellcrank seems wrong to me. I think it's a better setup using a closer to 90 degree pull than if I turned it around. Any thoughts?

Re: Shinn Brakes
I don't know if you're familiar with this link to Rob Lee's brake info, but perhaps you can figure out an answer from it:
