I have a BC-12 with Continental A-65. It has a Bendix "lunchbox" mag on the right with no impulse coupling.
On the left is a Bendix S4 mag with impulse coupling.
When the weather gets cold (cold being 60°F or below here in South Louisiana), and I'm starting the airplane for the first time in the day, sometimes the impulse coupling doesn't function.
If I pull the prop through compression, I don't hear the "clack" of the impulse coupling.
So I keep pulling the prop through. Sometimes I try turning the prop backwards. Sometimes I tap on the side of the mag. Nothing is really effective. But sooner of later, I hear the "clack". Then I can make the mag hot and it starts right up. Runs fine. Never sticks again for the rest of the day of starting and stopping even if the engine has been off for many hours.
Any idea what causes this and what remedial action I can take?
