  • Sticky Impulse coupling

I have a BC-12 with Continental A-65. It has a Bendix "lunchbox" mag on the right with no impulse coupling.
On the left is a Bendix S4 mag with impulse coupling.
When the weather gets cold (cold being 60°F or below here in South Louisiana), and I'm starting the airplane for the first time in the day, sometimes the impulse coupling doesn't function.
If I pull the prop through compression, I don't hear the "clack" of the impulse coupling.
So I keep pulling the prop through. Sometimes I try turning the prop backwards. Sometimes I tap on the side of the mag. Nothing is really effective. But sooner of later, I hear the "clack". Then I can make the mag hot and it starts right up. Runs fine. Never sticks again for the rest of the day of starting and stopping even if the engine has been off for many hours.

Any idea what causes this and what remedial action I can take?

    Re: Sticky Impulse coupling

There's a good chance it's gummed up with oil. You could have it disassembled and cleaned up and it'll probably work fine again. I've seen them pretty gummed up, especially from someone always using mineral oil. Sometimes the sludge will be thick enough to keep the flyweights from wanting to move out until things warm up a bit. I've also had a busted spring act like that..not work until warm..guess it depends on just where it's busted at. At any rate, it sounds like it's probably time to pull the mag and check that impulse out.

      Thanks, John
It's annual time for my airplane anyway. I think I'll pull the mag and open her up and see what I find. I'll report back if I find anything conclusive or interesting.

My 100 hr old "new"Slick's seams to have lost the impulse spring as well. Are broken springs or gumming up common proplems?
