Hello Paul-
I am a new visitor to the forum- I just got a 1946 BD12D in pieces. Are you upgrading your A/C? If so can you tell me the high points in upgrading to a BC12D-4-85? i.e. did you have to get a different engine? Was it hard to find? What new parts are necessary? I would like to get to an electrical system, and I am looking at the different options. Thanks

RE BC12-D conversion to -4-85

Dear Mike,

The conversion is very time consuming. It will require a fus. recover and some welding. Not difficult-but time consuming. If your paying an A&P it will be expensive!! You will need an 85-12F
engine and an extended motor mount. This also means you will need a new cowl( 4" longer) Again, not difficult but time consuming. A new engine will also mean a new prop!! Then comes the electrical system. Not difficult but time consuming. The last thing is the vent and fuel system. This is a real pain in the ass! It doesn't make sense to me or my A&P but the stc must be followed to the letter. Then at the end of this is the new paint job.
Again, not difficult, but time consuming. Overall, Mike, if I had it to do over (knowing what I know now) I probably wouldn't do it. It will be cheaper, more cost effective and there will certainly be fewer headaches and you will be flying much sooner if you purchase a Tcart that is already converted.

Rebuilding BC12D as a F19

Thanks for the info Paul-
The reason I was looking at the upgrade was that my BC12D is not covered, so I have to recover it. It is only missing a prop, so the new prop is not an issue. The welding and electrical is not an issue either. Fuel system sounds like a pain, and I am sure this upgrade will take a lot more time than just reassembling.

Are the parts made at the new Taylorcraft factory an option? I visited the factory in La Grange, TX last week and I was impressed with the parts inventory and their willingness to make just about anything they don't have in stock.

Is the extended cowling and the extended motor mount the same as the new aircraft they are making? Is saw their wooden "buck" for forming the lower cowl. It is an impressive piece.

Harry in LaGrange, Tx. has the parts or will make them.
I have a new cowl ,nose bowl and motor mount on order with
the new T-craft co. He is also making new stainless steel
exhaust systems.

The biggest problem with the conversion is building the baggage compartment. It's a bear. I saw another post that said that the cowling an motor mounts are now available from the factory. I would suggest that anything that you can get from them would be the way to go.

C-85-12 with O200 crank

Hello Paul-
Did I see another post that talks about putting a O200 crank in a C-85? Can you tell me the advantages of doing this? Is this an additional STC beyond the BC12D-4-85 upgrade?

Thanks for the info on the airframe/engine upgrade. I will study the STC closely when it arrives next week.

0200 STC

Hey Mike,

I think the other post you saw was mine. When I rebuilt my 85-12f, I upgraded to the 0200 crank, pistons and rods. The STC is held by Aircraft Specialities in Tulsa. I got a special deal on the parts if I bought the STC and the parts and new mileneum barrels. My 85 should now be turning out about 106 hp. Other folks that I have talked to that had the upgrade had nothing but great things to say about it. Rough cost for everything was about 6500 including the machine work on the main case and the accessory case.

I'll let everyone know what the results are within the next 60 days as I should be flying by then.

Jim,
The status "Lindberg" under your name is a default set up by the board aministrator. It will usually change after you make a certain pre-set number of posts to some different description. After making a few posts, you will be able to modify this if you so desire by going under the USER CONTROL PANEL / EDIT PROFILE / CUSTOM USER TEXT option.

The little picture under your name is called an AVATAR. If you'll go under USER CONTROL PANEL / EDIT OPTIONS / OTHER OPTIONS / AVATAR (bottom of the screen), you'll be able to upload your own small (very small) pictue to be used as your avatar.

I just couldent thinkof anything really neat for the status levels, so I just put in some goofy ones as a place holder.

If someone has some ideas for this I would appreeciate some help.

How about the different T'craft models (Ex: Taylor Cub up through F22) ?

Craig suggested How about the different T'craft models (Ex: Taylor Cub up through F22) ? for status levels. I would suggest using the other direction with the top level being the Taylor Cub.

Some of us think simpler is better.
