  • "Super Swick" Wings?

Is anyone flying Swick wings that have been clipped even more than the plans list? It's the same as Warren Pietsch's airplane, I believe. Looking for technical info, input on flight characteristics, and anything else someone can put in the info pile regarding those type of wings?!

    Thanks!

I have flown a set of Cole wings that were a shorter than my stock Swick wings. The ailerons were not as big though so roll rate suffered. Other than that not much difference. The Hangar 9 Clipwing that I just bought has wings a little shorter as well but I have not flown it yet. Still working out some little bugs.

The wings that I build are just 12' with 9' ailerons. In talking with Warren he indicates that when it is hot he really could use a little more wing area.

Flying is easy- to go up you pull back, to go down you pull back a little farther.

Did anyone do any engineering, or any drawings for clipping them even more the the Swick plans?

For mine I used the old NACA reports and engineering from the 1930's. It was very detailed on the warren style truss ribs and the spacing to be used for the expected G loading and speeds. I chose to use 1/16 ply leading edges to make a D section which strengthens them even more. I also went with a 48" ply doubler where each strut fitting attaches. For my 30% symmetrical hinged ailerons I sought help from some very experienced designers that have a very proven record of world class acro designs.

I have not released plans and probably will not do it. Now that I am building airplanes for my supper I am getting a little selfish with my designs.

I talked to Mike about the short wings one time. Construction-wise, the major difference is using a square drag bay in the outboard position instead of the rectangular one. On my plan set, you can faintly see the dimensions for the shorter wing struts weren't completely deleted/whited out, which is what prompted the conversation with Mike in the first place. He told me that he recalled that there were three of the short wing airplanes built: Warren's, one by Bud Judy and a third he couldn't remember.

As Eric pointed out, Warren admits that when it's Hot & High, the airplane could use a little bit more wing.

Where did Bud Judy's airplane go? Anyone know?

my dream still is a Swick length (I forget that exact length) foot eliptical tip with stock Ailerons . Ailerons may be too heavy (read more than likely will be) with spades though could be interesting. Now need to fund the dream !!
