  • 30% hinged symmetrical aileron- that just happened

Tribe- After looking at my ailerons and not being happy with the setup for acro I bit the bullet. A while back Steve Wolf helped me work out the dimensions and hinge line for some ailerons for the clipwing T based on the ones found on planes like the MX-2, Model 12 Pitts, Pitts S2-C and Extra.

Here is a rib template for the new design- it is actually going to be a much easier design than I thought with pushrods all the way out to the bellcranks. It ended up being 18" long (stock one is about 15 1/2") and the hinge is at 30% of the chord. It is also by design a little thicker at the hinge line than a stock aileron. Anyway- we are thinking that with a 8' aileron on a 12' wing it should work really well and have an excellent feel. If anyone has flown any of the newer high performance airplanes you know the aileron feel I am referencing- they are amazing.

If anyone is building all wood wings and wants to try this I'd be happy to share all my design data and jigs.

Gonna finish painting the fuselage and plumbing the engine then jump on the new ailerons.

Eric, you are going to have the greatest Tcraft in history. I really enjoyed visiting with you and seeing your excellent workmanship.

Saw the new Swick clip wing displayed in Oshkosh.....All wood wing (beautiful). He did the same thing by ending the ribs at the end of the rear spar and by using the same geometry (attach point as the old ailerons) he was able do do the 30% thing with the symetrical ailerons.....Looked like too good an idea not to copy for mine. Kinda re-lit the fire to work on my project..... Marcus

Yep- that is a good looking wing. . . .mine is pretty different in that I think he retained the same chord of around 15". I was a little worried about having a hinge that was that long so I increased the chord and added a little false spar- my hinges connect to the traditional location of the rear spar and also on the false spar. These are proving to be really easy to build- the pushrods should make for practically no slop. I cut my wood ribs the other day- looks like my aileron chord is around 18 1/2" with the hinge point at 29.7%. My wings are 12' and 8' of that is aileron. I'm shooting for 30 degrees up and down travel.

Steve Wolf said that I might not need spades- I plan to make provisions for them and only add them as a last resort. For these type of ailerons the spades do not lighten forces- they are there to add some feel for centering.
