I'm the server guy, who runs the hardware/software here. I only seem to pop in when there are outages or problems, as there was this week.

I wanted to give you all a heads-up about some recent events affecting the forum.

What happened:
The forum server was compromised. Starting Tuesday morning, and we noticed Wednesday. Attackers had gained unauthorized access and had planted malicious files on the system. While we have no evidence that member data was accessed or exfiltrated, we took the situation very seriously.

What we did:
I spent Thursday trying to recover from it, but the files were too buggered. So the compromise actually accelerated a migration we had already been planning on moving the forum to new hardware on a faster, isolated network. Here's a summary of what was done:

• Removed all malicious files and cleaned the server, eventually giving up
• Migrated the forum to a new server with stronger hardware
• Network should be higher speeds; unsure if that will be noticeable.
• Updated software installed for this major version of VBulletin
• Implemented a dual-layer firewall (both at the network VM level and at the operating system level) with strict outbound traffic controls
• Routed all public traffic through Cloudflare, which now provides DDoS protection and bot filtering
• Removed all remote access paths from the internet. Only through the Cloudflare tunnel now.
• Added a Cloudflare security challenge on the admin panel to block automated attacks
• Locked down server-level script execution to prevent future exploitation
• Configured secure email delivery through Mailgun

This should greatly reduce the effectiveness of the inevitable future exploit found in this forum software.

The good news:
The forum is back online, faster, and significantly more secure than before. Most things should be working as expected.

The plane I have came with the Baumann 1500s when purchased and the floats had been bought new by a previous owner. I have the stc, all the drawings, the installation and maintenance manual, but lack the flight supplement. This could be due to the plane having been identified, after the floats were purchased, as having the necessary modifications to qualify as Model 19 equivalent, whereupon stc SA1-210 was purchased and added to the paperwork. A BC12D-4-85 wouldn't have needed the flight supplement according to the Baumann AML, but it seems now it would?

I phoned Basler Conversions (current owners of the stc) and was told that they are unwilling to break up the package and supply me with the flight supplement on its own. I could, however, purchase the entire stc package for $1700. I tried to plead my case that I have the stc already and all other paperwork (and receipts from the original purchase), log entires of the floats having been installed, etc. to no avail. The representative I spoke with also said they have no records of any sales prior to their ownership of the stc.

I've also reached out to the FAA's Central Certification Branch which oversees the Chicago branch where the stc originated and made contact with a support specialist that I have hopes will be able to help me out. How long that might take is anyone's guess...

The 42 has a Scott tailwheel and the 45 has a Maule with a solid tire.... The 42 has a Scott tailwheel and the 45 has a Maule with a solid tire. While researching I found both tailwheel designs have fans and detractors with evidence to support both positions on both brands. Many feel the Scott is too light duty for our planes (when properly assembled and maintained they are NOT) and the big complaint about the Maule seems to be a tendency to shimmy too easily (ALSO something that is an assembly and rigging problem NOT a design flaw).
A problem I have run into on the Maule is the steering springs. One of my past jobs was as a landing gear engineer for Navy aircraft and I did a lot of studying on landing gear dynamics and design for my degree. The first thing that made my hair stand on end was the number of Maule tailwheels that have compression springs. That will work fine SO LONG AS THE SPRING NEVER BOTTOMS OUT! A spring that goes solid could massively overload the gear and cause lots of damage. A tension spring, in an extreme situation, will over stretch and fail but not destroy the tail wheel. Things WILL get exciting, but not like a solid spring. The problem I have had is I can't find the original tension springs or a spec for them anywhere. Do ANY of you guys have a source for the correct tension springs (they are supposed to be different from each other!) or have the specs or a set I can get measurements from? The only hard part with reproducing the spec would be the spring constant but I can talk anyone through a simple test to measure that.
With proper assembly and parts BOTH the Scott and Maule tailwheels should work fine on our panes. I have taken a pile of photos and have a machinist who can make the missing/unavailable parts as "owner produced" parts for those who want to rebuild their gear (a good idea at annual!).
I hope to post articles on the Shinn brakes (another nightmare of home made parts!) and both tail wheel types soon. The brakes are a whole separate can of worms and it is no wonder people thing Shinn brakes are no good. They are FINE for our planes WHEN BUILT UP CORRECTLY!.
